What is the Bridge? Why are there 24,902 miles?
The goal of this website is to build a virtual bridge around the planet connecting people who want to make a difference in the world. The distance around the world is 24,902 miles and we are asking 24,902 people to add miles to create this virtual bridge. For each mile created, funds will be given to the charity selected. How do miles make a difference?
Every time a mile is created a sponsor will donate money to one of the 12 Bridge charities. You can choose which of the charities the money goes to by selecting the social issue that most interests you. Creating a mile also helps build awareness for the social issues. By inviting other people to view your mile and add their own you can help direct more money and attention to the charities.

Is thegluenetwork.com a not-for-profit company?
Though thegluenetwork.com provides many services that are similar to not-for-profit corporations, thegluenetwork.com is for-profit.
Why not? For-profit companies have the ability to generate more revenue, more partnerships, more awareness, and more involvement because they can retain more discretion on how the money is used. As a result, we can financially support not-for-profit companies that are appropriately committing their money and time to direct aid efforts. The benefits of being a not-for-profit with 501c3 status, such as tax exemption, are outweighed by the benefits of being a for-profit company. We believe we can raise more funds for social causes by being a revenue generating company. 100% of the money donated to causes via thegluenetwork.com site, events or programs goes directly to the causes themselves, and in addition, a significant portion of our own profits from product sales, etc. are donated to social causes with the remainder designated for company operations. With this structure we have the ability to generate more money and thus donate much more money. In addition, we can support multiple causes in need, and we can become a grant-writing organization.

Why a network? Why not just do fundraisers?
We value sharing, participation and a common purpose. We believe that community can lead to individual success, but also that the power of the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. We consider interaction, inspiration and networking to be essential for making a difference in the world. Though fundraisers are effective, we also think that many people want to get involved in ways beyond donating money. By getting people together in a network we can offer access to individuals with time, talent, resources and above all a similar passion and purpose. In addition, we believe that awareness and involvement will ultimately raise more financial support and enact more social change than fundraisers alone.
